![]() There’s combat in Solar Ash, but it’s secretly another mobility tool. Just like Shadow of the Colossus famously reduced everything that didn’t serve its core gameplay, Heart Machine is careful not to overcomplicate what already feels good. Nothing is arbitrary everything supports the movement and helps smooth it even further. A time-slowing maneuver lets Rei dash into targets from a long distance, and there’s a boost to help speed around faster. There aren’t a ton of extra tools, but that’s because the game doesn’t need them. Stringing jumps and grinds together to complete platforming puzzles feels like executing a graceful dance routine. There are a few collectibles - including alternate suits and lore-deepening audio logs - strewn about the world, too, which add some optional platforming challenges to the mix for players who want some rewards for exploring. These make great use of the movement mechanics, giving players little challenges in each level that test their mastery and speed. ![]() Most of the game’s puzzles are timer-based micro-gauntlets, where Rei needs to quickly slash a few stakes and plant her sword in a giant eye before she’s vaporized by the black goo around her. Exploration is a fast-paced ballet where players rarely ever have to stop moving. Movement is simple to grasp but instantly gratifying. ![]() Holding down the left trigger allows Rei to dash around any surface like an ice skater or grind on anything rail-like, from plant roots to dismantled subway tracks floating in the air. Its story is a little less effective when it crosses into a comparatively vague meditation on individuals picking up the pieces, but it’s a good use of sci-fi as a real-world allegory.Īs their name implies, Voidrunners can run - or more accurately, “skate.” The game is all about exploring the world at a fast pace with some fluid mobility tools. Audio logs describe a familiar dystopia where the black hole’s emergence somehow morphed into a divisive political issue that put government reaction in a stalemate. It’s most effective when it offers commentary on real issues, like our own politicians’ inability to come together and solve life-threatening crises in a timely manner. It’s a surprisingly rich science-fiction tale loaded with history and world-building. The game follows a runner named Rei as she travels around the decaying planet slaying giant monsters, which will allow her to use the Starseed. While the world’s government proves useless in stopping it, a group of people called Voidrunners are deployed to activate the Starseed, a device capable of stopping a black hole. A massive black hole appears near a planet and starts gradually ripping it apart. Solar Ash’s world may look brightly colored, but its story is darkly apocalyptic. It’s a momentum-filled indie game that’s always moving, even though it skates past some finer details in the process. The fluid cloud-skating movement is just plain pleasurable, while towering bosses provide unforgettable set pieces that put speed and reaction time to the test. In that regard, Solar Ash is a successful experiment that bubbles to life with vibrant colors and unmatched style.įilled with memorable sequences, Solar Ash is a focused follow-up to Hyper Light Drifter that constantly inspires moments of awe. Sometimes, the fun of video game development comes from the digital alchemy that occurs when developers start to mix beakers. Its gargantuan boss fights bring Shadow of the Colossus to mind, while the reality-bending space exploration calls back to Super Mario Galaxy. Fitbit Versa 3ĭeveloped by Heart Machine, the studio behind indie hit Hyper Light Drifter, several elements of Solar Ash will seem familiar at first glance.

In addition to the Clarity Adjustment you can also adjust Hue, Saturation and Luminosity that works well too. Usually, the setting you need to bring the best out in parts of your image will create unwanted noise in the sky for example, with the masks you can make selections and decide where you want the effect applied. You can also then decide how much of it is in your final image by using the Opacity slider or even better, with the Mask tool that I am suitably impressed with. Each of these sliders effects your image in different ways, and rather than a one slider fits all approach like Lightroom, this gives you much more precise control over HOW the clarity and contrast is applied. Topaz Clarity essentially allows you to adjust areas of contrast in 4 areas, Micro, Low, Medium and High contrast areas. Even after I have used Lightroom and photoshop to create what I think I am happy with, I have then used Topaz Clarity and I can get an image with even more depth, it’s like adding that little bit more when you thought there was nothing left! This new one they have just released called Topaz Clarity is like having complete control over the contrast in your image, if you’re like me and use the clarity slider in Lightroom to enhance your images, then you’re going to love Topaz Clarity. I have been using the Topaz Labs plugins for a little over a year now and my favourite Topaz Plugin is Topaz Adjust, although they’re all good! I think you can save around $250 if you take the complete plugin package. You can try it for free for 30 days, give it a shot and let me know what you think in the comments.Topaz Labs have really come to the party with this plug in. The core functionality does work well, and if you’re looking for fine grain clarity control Topaz Clarity is a good one. These are minor issues I’m sure will be addressed in time, but they’re there. Also, Command-Z doesn’t seem to undo brush strokes. The brush, for example, doesn’t repsond to the a two-finger drag to resize and the “” keys don’t always the resize brush when clicked. The layout of the HSL sliders for example is definitely an homage to Lightroom, but some of the UI functionality is a bit buggy (at last in the Mac version at release). If you’ve used Lightroom, you’ll notice similarities between it and Clarity. Ok, it’s new software, are there any bugs ? By the way, if you’re interested in Denoise, checkout my video tutorial here. If you can skip coffee for a while, the Topaz Bundle has a great set of tools like Adjust, Denoise, and Detail (to name a few). ![]() Skip a few cups of coffee and give it a whirl. That’s not a bad deal for the kind of fine tuned control it gives you. Topaz will be selling Clarity for $49.99 but has it discounted to $29.99 until May 31st. I’d like to see something like that get incorporated into Lightroom & Photoshop. Think layer masks in photoshop, but large enough for you to see where the brush was applied. You can also create your own as is expected.Īnother nice feature with the masking brush is a preview showing you where the brush has been applied. The presets themselves are broken down into collections like Documentary, Landscape, Fashion, Wedding and so-on to give you a head start depending on the type of photography you do. In addition to clarity and contrast, you also get Hue Saturation and Luminance controls, as well as, a good list of presets to get you started. ![]() ![]() Clarity is like a contrast scalpel providing you with control when you want it. I like the fine tune control over Micro, Low, Medium and High Contrast. Tonemapped images always need a contrast boost. That’s a real nice feature allowing you to brush-in/brush-out the effect as desired. Is it perfect? I do see a bit of haloing, but it is so slight that it’s easily addressed with the masking brush Topaz makes available. ![]() But it bothers scientists on a fundamental level. That being said, if you’re still at a loss where to start, a way to consider it is what you want your final output to be. You’ll be bringing knowledge and experience to a new area. So it’s ok to switch if you aren’t feeling it anymore, and when you try something new you won’t be going in “square one”. ![]() It’s hard to make cool things no matter what, you might as well have that extra motivational boost of wanting to use the tools you are using.Īlso, even though these things are different, the things you learn in one can apply to the others. I think this forum will be a great place for you to discuss and get feedback from people, so I’d say keep asking questions. So it’s totally natural to be overwhelmed. There are certainly a lot of options, and people doing great work with everything. If you want to, feel free to message me if you want to chat about this more. And Resolume is supposedly really good, but it’s pretty expensive if you wind up pulling the trigger and buying a license.Īnyway…apologies for the novel I’ve written here, haha. But it’s in beta, and the documentation is a bit confusing, imo. Not to add more to your list, but cables.gl is a cool thing to try out, it kind of feels like a cross between Max and TD, but all in-browser. There are also a ton of great tutorials for TD on YouTube (I’m watching Elekktronaut’s TD beginner series at the moment), and Andrew Robinson’s Jitter tutorials are awesome if you want to dive deeper into that. I don’t think you can go wrong with any option you listed. If I can offer a suggestion: just try what appeals to you the most, and give it a bit of time to get a feel for what kind of workflow appeals to you more. The options are pretty overwhelming, right? I’m in the same boat: I’m just dipping my toes into this stuff and there’re so many potential avenues to take! I’ve seen so much done with just max/jitter (I really enjoy Tom Hall’s work) that I wonder what are the advantages/differences compared to all these other options? Nodebox (python), Hydra, Kubus (li fo 2d), Pixivisor was mentioned once early in the thread… so many options - I think my biggest question is: Touchdesigner - seems very deep/flexible mentioned by makes it sound like it’s maybe a better idea to skip processing and jump straight into this. P5.js - not sure what this is but was mentioned several times here Processing - seems like a good starting point for one who is a beginner but wants to learn a language In general I think I am a little overwhelmed by all the options: Would you still suggest it now or maybe something as an alternative? The other work you’re doing sounds really cool too I’ve recently started experimenting with max/jitter, just basic Lcd with feedback and rotation, but I know there is so much more (suggestions really like the love2d gifs you posted, you mentioned it was years ago that you got into it. ![]() ![]() Takemichi returns to the present, only to find out that Hinata and his friends still die in the current timeline.
